The last Aztec ruler Cuauhtémoc (also Gautimozin) put up uncompromising resistance against the Spanish conquerors under Hernán Cortés and defended Tenochtitlán to the last. Shortly before the fall of the city, however, he was unmasked and captured on 13 August 1521 while attempting to escape on a boat. Engraving: Lick
