Born on 4 May 1923 in Amsterdam, the author spent his childhood and youth in Dutch East India, now Indonesia. John Folmer was called up on 6 January 1942 and received basic training in Sennheim in Alsace and Klagenfurt respectively. By the beginning of May 1942, training was completed and the author was assigned to SS Regiment 10 "Westland" in the 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division "Wiking" as MG gunner 2. In the Caucasus he was severely wounded by two bullet holes in the thigh. A stay in hospital followed. In March 1943, he returned to the troops and was assigned as a Kradmelder in the battalion staff. After further front-line service, he was transferred to the Junkerschule in Bad Tölz in the summer of 1944 and was promoted to Untersturmführer, completing the course. His last wartime deployment was with SS Panzergrenadier Regiment 96 in the 38th SS Panzergrenadier Division "Nibelungen" in southern Germany. In 1951, the author again reported for war service in Korea as an ordinary rifleman. He served in the Dutch battalion and was again promoted to sergeant.
