In this work, the author draws on extensive material previously unavailable to readers about the four days and nights of heavy and costly defensive fighting in the Seelow Heights and into the Märkische Schweiz. By employing large-scale combat tactics and making consistent use of the terrain, the numerically inferior German forces succeeded in significantly slowing down the pace of the Soviet attack and preventing the two Guards Tank Armies from breaking away from the infantry and advancing rapidly towards Berlin. The violent reconnaissance of the Soviet troops preceding the general attack, which marked the beginning of the battle for the heights, occupies a special place in the history of the battle.
