As one of the first defensive fortifications, the Neckar-Enz-Stellung was built in the west between 1935 and 1938, even before the construction of the Westwall. Situated relatively far into the country, it respected the ban on military installations in a 50 km wide border exclusion zone, as stipulated in the Treaty of Versailles.
