This book describes how fortifications were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. From planning to handover, all the activities involved are described in detail and accompanied by illustrations. Thanks to the versatile activities of its master fortress builder Vauban, France took over the leading role in Europe and replaced the Italians and Dutch, who had previously set the tone in this profession. For this reason, the methods of construction used and recorded by Vauban and later by Belidor form the basis of this book.

The labour, material and cost calculations, as well as the salaries and wages of the fortress personnel of fortifications in other countries, which have received less attention in other works, are also dealt with. In particular, the examples of work processes in words and pictures are described in an easily understandable way. All the works listed are backed up by extensive sources, which are listed at the end of each chapter.
