After the end of the First World War, the Allied armies were stationed in Germany, with France occupying 75% of the territory, mainly on the left bank of the Rhine. For twelve years, this French Rhine army was exposed to provocations from the Berlin government, attacks and acts of sabotage, the occupation of the Ruhr region, but also government crises in France and growing tensions with the Anglo-Saxons. Nevertheless, the memory of this seems to have faded, even though several hundred thousand soldiers and civilian employees were involved in this protracted operation. As the first comprehensive summary of these events, this book reminds us that military history is intertwined with political, diplomatic, economic, social and cultural considerations. It also bears witness to the slow decline of France, which was victorious in 1918 but by 1930 was a weakened and exhausted nation. An important chapter in the history of France and Europe, which brings military and security issues back to the forefront of political debate.
