From the battlefield to the collective imagination: how has the image of the nurse evolved and how has it changed? This exciting and thoroughly researched narrative intertwines the fates and testimonies of women from all walks of life who left their homes in their thousands during the First World War to break new ground and become nurses. Alternately idealised, sexualised and rendered invisible, excluded from knowledge, power and the events of war, moulded and confined first to the household and then to the hospital, these women make their voices heard here. Drawing on numerous witness statements, notes hastily jotted down in emergency situations, diaries and writings intended for publication, Françoise Coquillat recounts the emergence of a profession, the determination, exhaustion and sometimes despair of these women who were thrown unprepared into the horrors of war. She also describes the relationships between men and women at the beginning of the 20th century, which were characterised by self-sacrifice, tenderness, admiration or anger.
