The story of the CSS Alabama and its captain Raphael Semmes is unique in maritime history. This frigate, built in Liverpool for the Confederate Navy and never having a home port, waged war against the US merchant navy for two years. Raphael Semmes succeeded in almost completely disrupting Yankee trade: he sank 67 ships, appearing where no one expected him and disappearing again immediately. The Union Navy ships that hunted him across the world's oceans were never able to detect him. At the head of a crew of English mercenaries from the slums of Liverpool, he managed to wage a merciless war without bloodshed. The CSS Alabama finally fought its last battle off Cherbourg on 19 June 1864. It was sunk by the USS Kearsarge, but Raphael Semmes managed to escape capture in an adventurous manner.
