The Kalashnikov was developed by a young Red Army sergeant, Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, who wanted to provide Soviet soldiers with a high-quality weapon. It became a symbol of the communist armies and guerrilla movements supported by China and the USSR during the Cold War. It became a commercial product, sometimes used to arm Russia's enemies or anti-communist groups (such as the Nicaraguan Contras). What's more, in organised crime and international terrorism circles, it is now considered a sign of professional success, similar to the Colt .45 after the Second World War. Experts now estimate that there are more than 100 million Kalashnikov assault rifles in existence, making it the most widely used handgun in the world! The first part of this book describes in detail the development of the weapon, from the first AK-47s introduced into the Soviet Army in 1949 to the latest AK-12s adopted by the Russian Army in 2018. The second part reveals the various variants of the weapon manufactured outside Russia in more than thirty countries!
