Special issue 31 of the "Gazette des Armes" series. For almost a century, Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield rifles were players in contemporary history on every continent. The Lee-Metfords, the British Army's first small-calibre repeating rifles, were used by Lord Kitchener's soldiers in Sudan against the Mahdi's troops and later in South Africa against the Boers. Their shortened version, the SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield), landed in France in 1914 with the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force, who were sent to support the French army. Between the two world wars, the Lee Enfields took part in "pacification missions" in India and the Middle East. A modernised version, known as "Rifle No. 4", was adopted in 1926, but did not go into production until 1940. It took part with the British soldiers in the campaigns to liberate Europe and was subsequently distributed in large quantities by parachute to the European resistance movements, which is why it is not uncommon to still discover them in some French barns today. This book describes the history and development of this family of rifles, which is still very popular with both collectors and shooters with old weapons.
