Johann Georg Rothaug's "Geographischer Atlas zur Vaterlandskunde an den österreichischen Mittelschulen" is one of the most impressive atlases from the imperial era. The year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Habsburg monarchy. To mark this occasion, the cultural geographer and cartographer Peter Jordan presents a new edition of the atlas published in 1911 by Johann Georg Rothaug at Freytag & Berndt. Impressive and precise, this map series documents the territorial structure of the Habsburg Empire.
The volume contains a large number of general maps, country maps and maps of the surroundings of cities. If one compares the map of Europe with that of 100 years ago, one realises that today no fewer than 13 states lie wholly or partly on the territory of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and Austria. In addition, this edition offers valuable historical graphics from L. A. Hickmann's "Geographisch-statistischer Taschen-Atlas von Österreich- Ungarn" (Geographical-Statistical Pocket Atlas of Austria-Hungary), Vienna/Leipzig 1909. Numerous statistical tables on the political-territorial division and population of Austria-Hungary as well as an alphabetical index of 500 places with the names used in the atlas as well as today's official designations complete the work.
