Description
This four-volume work with a total of more than 2500 pages presents the biographies of 1172 Austrian generals from the years between the founding of the First Republic and the State Treaty in 1955. In three volumes, the family backgrounds, training courses, service careers and assignments as well as the honours earned in peace and war by the troop and general staff officers, military doctors, intendants, engineer officers and other officers of the special services, as well as those of the generals of the police and gendarmerie, are covered.
The accompanying and commentary volume reveals the historical context and background of the generals' appointments in the years between 1919 and 1955. Statistical evaluations with regard to religious confession, ancestry, social background and opportunities for advancement in the respective careers round off the overall picture. For the first time, the fates of those generals who were subjected to political or racial persecution in the years between 1938 and 1945 are also revealed. The rehabilitation of politically reprimanded officers at the beginning of the Second Republic is also dealt with. The extensive document section brings to light file material that has never before been published to this extent in any other publication. This includes the list of members of the "National Socialist Soldiers' Ring" (NSR) as well as minutes of the Muff Commission and the secret records of First Lieutenant Dr. Josef Eckinger with politically incriminating material on the officers of the Austrian Armed Forces. Around 300 portrait photos, most of them previously unpublished, in Volume 1 (Documents and Photos) illustrate the biographies and provide a valuable aid to identifying generals.
