Description
For a century, the Imperial Carriage Museum in Schönbrunn has captivated visitors from all over the world with its collection of magnificent carriages from the Viennese court. The eventful history of this marstall museum is not only closely linked to Austria's contemporary history, but also illustrates how much the institution of the museum has changed over the last hundred years.
On 9 September 1922, the Wagenburg was officially opened in the former Winter Riding School at Schönbrunn. Since then, the historical holdings of the Imperial Court Stables, which were transferred to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1921, have been on display there. These are not only the best-preserved fleet of court carriages from the 19th and early 20th centuries, but also a unique collection of historical harnesses, harnesses and paintings. Mario Döberl has now published the first comprehensive history of the Wagenburg to mark its 100th anniversary. He also looks back to the time before its opening, when the Marstall objects could already be viewed in the former court stables in today's Museumsquartier in the form of a pre-museum installation. The chronological structure is broken up by several historical longitudinal sections on topics such as pest control or court carriages on film, by essayistic digressions, for example on the smell of the museum or on changing mentalities and rules, by case histories and by interviews with contemporary witnesses.
