Medieval ritual bath in May

Europe 13th. - 14th. century.
In remembrance of old pagan customs, people would gather for a special bathing festival on the night before Walpurgis in the Middle Ages. The strengthening and healing power of the revived nature should be transferred to the people.

According to the (medieval) belief of the time, baths taken in spring - the May baths - were said to have special healing powers. The May bath, recommended in health and folk calendars as a ritual at the end of winter, was always a warm bath, often with the addition of fresh spring herbs. "All baths are good, especially herbal baths", wrote a chronicler in the 16th century. A full day in the hot tub was supposed to keep you healthy for a whole year. According to old traditions, some sick people bathed for days on end and even slept in the water.
