Around the year 1835, Carl Graf Vasquez created those maps of Vienna that, for decades, have been regarded as coveted objects among art lovers and collectorsand not solely for their magnificent coloring. What elevates Carl Graf Vasquezs maps above other plans of the Biedermeier era are the marginal vedutas appended to each sheet: these are artistically sophisticated vignettestypically fourteen in numberdepicting the "distinguished buildings" of the specific area covered by the respective map. Here, churches and state edifices stand side by side with stately bourgeois residences. Vasquez chose the police districts as the fundamental organizational unit for his maps. In 1751, several suburbs had been grouped together to form such administrative unitsa classification that, in many instances, already corresponded to the municipal districts established in 1850. This volume presents a unique complete edition of the eleven maps of Vienna (Vienna with Suburbs, Inner City, Leopoldstadt, Landstraße, Wieden, Mariahilf, St. Ulrich, Josefstadt, Alservorstadt, Rossau, Wien 1147), supplemented by a reprint of the map of Baden bei Wien. Walter Öhlinger, a curator at the Wien Museum, provides a detailed description of each of these individual mapsall drawn from the Wien Museums collectionas well as a precise commentary on the more than 170 marginal vedutas.
