Description
The idea of mounting a machine gun on a car chassis is as old as the automobile itself. In the early days around 1900, there were various terms for this design: some spoke of "automobile machine guns", others of "war automobiles". Often these were simple cars with machine gun mounts, like the famous Panhard-Genty, which was sent to Morocco at the end of 1907.
Others were already real armoured cars, like the CGV, which was presented to the French army in 1906. The First World War, which began in August 1914, gave this new combat device its definitive name: "self-propelled machine gun" and its derivative form "autocannon". From October 1914 onwards, various car chassis proved capable of withstanding fire from small 37 mm guns supplied by the navy, together with their crews. This gave rise to a new, very peculiar type of weapon in France, in which sailors with red pompoms made the roads at the front unsafe. These new vehicles, based mainly on Peugeot and Renault chassis, were transferred to the cavalry in 1916 and awaited their hour of glory in every attempt to break through the front. In this richly illustrated work, no model developed up to 1918, whether production model or prototype, is forgotten. Each model is treated, with illustration given first place.
