One of six Cannon-class destroyer escorts built in the United States, which was transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1950 as part of the Mutual Defence Assistance Programme. These diesel-electric powered ships were built to escort convoys during the Second World War and were mainly used by the US's allies in building up their navies in the 1950s. When the Korean War broke out at that time, two of the Dutch ships were sent to support the US Navy in this war zone, where they mainly carried out coastal bombardment tasks.
