Description
This book explores the history of unsuccessful and sometimes forgotten explorers and conquerors who set out for America from England, France or German lands. The book shows what plans they made, how they dealt with setbacks and how their failure paved the way for colonial empires.
The beginnings of European expansion consisted not only of the rise of the Iberian colonial empires, which was disastrous for indigenous cultures. It was also the story of the losing failure of people who set out from England, France or German lands with high expectations to become famous as explorers or conquerors. This book offers an overall history of their unsuccessful colonial projects in North and South America. It combines an account of political intrigues, mutinies, battles at sea and intercultural encounters with an analysis of the processing, concealment or even denial of failure. Special attention is paid to indigenous actors who influenced the history of colonial projects over more than one hundred years through knowledge transfer, trade, boycotts or violence. The study shows that unsuccessful Europeans also shaped notions of the New World and thus paved the way for colonial empires.
