Description
The bed is a political place - Yoko Ono and John Lennon were not the first to know that. For since time immemorial, people have not only slept in bed, but also governed, communicated, conceived and given birth to offspring, but of course also suffered and died. For centuries, what happens in bed was largely public and part of social interaction. It is only in the recent past that the bed seems to have retreated into the private sphere - or has it?
Nadia Durrani and Brian Fagan have taken a closer look at the amazingly complex history of the bed - from the very first couches of the Stone Age to Tutankhamun's golden resting place to the triumph of the waterbed. For a long time, the bed was the showpiece of the home. Traditionally, the entire court attended the rising and dressing of the "Sun King" Louis XIV (who, however, had more than 500 beds to his name). Nowadays, our sleeping places are mostly hidden from visitors' view and sometimes even disappear into the wall. At the same time, thanks to modern technology, we are in contact with the whole world in bed. And it is still true today that what happens in bed reveals the most about a person's nature.
