Description
In 1627, the Franciscan friar Frei Vicente do Salvador wrote a history of Brazil from the arrival of the Portuguese in South America in 1500 to the present day. He reports on the discovery of the continent and the first contacts with the original inhabitants. He praises the country's wealth, but also describes the gradual colonisation, the beginning exploitation of nature and the displacement of the indigenous population, which led to cruel conflicts.
He tells of expeditions into the interior, pirate raids and wars against other European powers who also wanted to settle in Brazil. His historical work ends with the conquest of Salvador da Bahia by the Dutch and the Portuguese reconquest, which he experienced as an eyewitness. Frei Vicente's History of Brazil, available in translation for the first time, is the most important source on Brazil's early colonial history and offers direct and authentic access to the sometimes dramatic events in the young Portuguese colony. Numerous maps of the time supplement the text and illustrate the gradual development of this vast country.
