Description
Field Marshal - Grand Master of the Order of Dr. Knights - Patron of the Arts. Habsburg's most noble knight of the 20th century. Known and unknown biographies. He descended from the Habsburg-Teschen line and was born on 21 May 1863 in Großseelowitz (Moravia) as the son of Archduke Karl Ferdinand. Eugene was a grandson of the legendary victor of Aspern. Archduke Eugene was primarily an officer and was of very tall stature for the time. As an officer he rose to the rank of field marshal and was largely deployed on the Isonzo Front in the First World War. His second career was that of High and German Master, first Coadjutor and from 1894 Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights until his voluntary resignation in 1923 after the fall of the monarchy. As a private citizen he was very art-loving and a great collector of weapons, books, etc. and also an accomplished art connoisseur. After returning from exile, he lived in the Deutschordensniederlassung in Gumpoldskirchen, but the National Socialists confiscated it in 1938 and he had to spend the war period in Vienna. At the end of the war he fled to Tyrol, then resided in Igls near Innsbruck and spent his retirement there.
