Description
The goddess Victoria was, according to Roman conception, responsible for the victory over the enemy achieved by military means. Her intervention and benevolence was a prerequisite for the creation of the Pax Romana, a peace order enforced by military might. Victoria, together with Mars, the god of war, thus became the symbol of Rome's rule over the world as willed by the gods. Based on two new statue finds from Öhringen, this book provides an insight into Roman victory propaganda, in which the same types of images were used for centuries as carriers of clear political messages and were thus understood throughout the world of the time.
The gods of victory were also widespread along the Limes. However, they are not only found here as evidence of Roman state and army religion, but were also associated with indigenous Celtic religious ideas. The pictorial representations and inscriptions, which are presented in summary form for the first time in this book, thus also show a pair of gods with two faces. How successfully the ancient representations of Victoria and Mars harmonised image and message and thus created timeless symbols is conveyed in the last part of the book, which deals with the reception of the Roman deities of victory from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Volume 65 of the "Schriftenreihe des Limesmuseums Aalen".
