Description
The Roman legionary belongs to Roman antiquity like the Colosseum and the toga. With iron track armour over a red tunic, helmet with cheek flaps and the typical rectangular shield, he still reports for duty today - in books, comics, TV documentaries and, of course, cinema films. Whether it's the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, the Marcomannic Wars or the fight against Attila's Huns, the Roman line infantryman appears almost uniform.
His equipment changed constantly. Boris Burandt's archaeologically sound study of the Roman legionary paints a far more differentiated picture: he accompanies him through the first century and meticulously traces the development of his weapons and equipment. Detailed reconstructions of individual pieces of equipment, fresco paintings and mosaics impressively illustrate the description of the mostly fragmentary finds. In this way, this book manages to preserve the splendour of the Roman legionary and to fascinate for the variations of his battle dress.
