The so-called soldier-emperor period (235-285) is generally regarded as one of the most crisis-ridden epochs of the Roman Empire. Permanent raids by "barbarian" peoples into the empire's territory, the aggressive conquest policy of the Persian Empire, social upheavals and the large number of usurpers who tried to dispute the legitimate emperor's power are characteristic of these turbulent decades.

Evaluating literary, numismatic and epigraphic sources, 52 persons are presented here in short biographies who, according to tradition, more or less successfully attempted to gain rule over the empire. In addition to the historically authenticated, there are also usurpers and events freely invented by the ancient authors, which make it clear that deliberate distortions and "fake news" are not phenomena of our time alone.
