The building collapse on the site of the famous archaeological site in 2010 was by no means the first since excavations began. But this time it acted as a wake-up call. Driven by international attention, the Grande Progetto Pompei was launched, using European funding to ensure that the unprecedented monument would be saved from further deterioration. Massimo Osanna, Director General of the Italian Museums, presents the efforts to preserve the unique excavation site and presents the finds that have caused a particular stir since then. Numerous photos give an impression of the latest discoveries and measures to ensure that Pompeii will continue to fascinate future generations
79 AD the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii under masses of dust and ash. What was an inconceivable tragedy for the inhabitants at the time and claimed countless lives was to prove a stroke of luck for archaeology centuries later. Since 1748, official excavations have been taking place on the former city site, offering unique insights into the lives of people in Roman antiquity. Prof. Dr. Massimo Osanna was the director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park and knowledgeably guides visitors through the magnificent archaeological finds, especially in recent years. He succeeded in writing a book about Pompeii, in which the everyday life of the Romans before the catastrophe is discussed as well as the problems of modern monument protection.
