Description
There are considerable gaps in documentation and information on archery in the Roman period. Although there are good analyses and observations, as well as initial practical experience with reconstructed bows, well-founded information has been very difficult to obtain, especially for the interested layman, and often only in piecemeal form. This volume is the first work that not only brings together the relevant finds and evidence and presents the current state of research. It also puts the various pieces of the mosaic together to form an overall picture and offers further suggestions for their interpretation. In this way, new impulses are given to further research and a wealth of illustrative material is made available to the interested layman.
Reflex bows, longbows, arrows, quivers and accessories were part of archery in Roman times. Archaeological finds and ancient pictorial and textual sources provide us today with a colourful picture of the equipment as well as of its practical use in training, sport, combat and hunting. Experimental research illustrates the efficiency and range of use at the time. Romans, Orientals, Greeks, Celts, Germanic tribes, Sarmatians and Huns - different elements of the bow weapon were able to complement each other in a unique way in the Imperium Romanum. In this book, technical developments are explained and placed in their respective contexts. This survey work serves the scientific demands of historical research as well as the thirst for knowledge of archers, bow makers and historical reenactors and provides readers with many new and often surprising insights. Anyone interested in bows and arrows in the Roman Imperial period now has here the comprehensive standard work on the subject that has been so long desired.
