The 101st Squadron was one of the most famous units of the Royal Italian Air Force and later the Italian Air Force. It was founded in Lonate Pozzolo in 1941 and equipped with German Ju 87B Stuka dive bombers. The squadron was involved in extensive and intense combat operations in Albania, Malta and North Africa. It was subsequently re-equipped with CR.42s and ended hostilities with Reggiane 2002, 2001 and Macchi 202 aircraft. After the war, the 101st Squadron received Spitfires and then switched to P-47 Thunderbolts supplied by America. In the jet age, the group used F-84G and F-84F aircraft. In 1964, the Starfighters arrived, which were later replaced again by F-84Fs. On this occasion, the 101st was transferred to Cervia, a base from which it operated for several years. The unit was the last to use the decommissioned G.91Y aircraft. After several months of operational service, the 101st Squadron was re-established as an OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) in Amendola. This time, the aircraft used were AMXs. Its role as an operational conversion unit remained until its disbandment on 3 November 2016.
