The battles fought in North Africa between the summer of 1942 and the spring of 1943 were among the fiercest of the entire war. The Axis powers were now outnumbered and trapped between the British 8th Army in Egypt and the Allied forces that had landed in French North Africa. The failed victory at El Alamein in July 1942 led to a stalemate that forced the Italian-German tank army to retreat to Tripoli in the following October and from there to Tunisia, where the last resistance on African soil was organised. Among the various Italian forces that took part in this retreat were the commands in Libya and the Libyan Sahara, which until then had been engaged in defending the rear of the front. The final battles in Tunisia put an end to any possibility of resistance and made the situation clear for the Axis powers. This book contains a series of reports, including those by Bastico and Messe, which clearly illustrate the developments in North Africa between the summer of 1942 and the spring of 1943, up to the final battle of Enfidaville.
