The Macchi C.202 Folgore represents the pinnacle of Italian fighter aircraft development during the Second World War, as well as the most advanced aircraft mass-produced by the *Regia Aeronautica*. Dubbed the "Longnose" by the British due to its distinctive, tapered engine cowling, the Folgore was the result of an ambitious design project: the integration of the powerful German Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine into the airframe structure of the earlier Macchi C.200 Saetta. This creation was the work of the renowned engineer Mario Castoldi, whofully in keeping with the tradition of the Varese-based companybestowed the designation letter "C" upon the aircraft. The structure and skin were constructed entirely of metal; the aircraft retained the wings and empennage of its predecessor, while the fuselage was completely redesigned to achieve superior aerodynamics. With a top speed of approximately 600 kilometers per hour, the Folgore proved to be fast, agile, robust, and reliablequalities that made it extremely popular among Italian pilots, despite certain inherent systemic weaknesses.
