The English Electric Lightning was the first RAF fighter to reach speeds of Mach 2. Originally conceived purely as an experimental aircraft, it was developed by the manufacturerdespite insufficient government fundinginto a highly capable combat aircraft. It also proved to be a major export success, particularly with the Royal Saudi Air Force, thereby paving the way for significant export orders for future aircraft types to Saudi Arabia and other nations. Although the Lightning was demanding to fly and maintainone pilot aptly likened the experience to "riding a rocket"it was held in high regard by pilots and ground crew alike; its impressive rate of climb, among other performance characteristics, was particularly prized.
