Us in the first millennium.
The first millennium a. New empires, new rulers, a new religion led to a change in society, but also to drastic changes for the individual and his life situation, in times of conflict as well as in peaceful phases. Based on a number of important archaeological sites from Baden- Württemberg, this volume vividly illustrates fundamental aspects of change, but also of continuity. We associate terms such as Romans, Franks, Alamanni, Swabians or emperors, duchy and church with this millennium, but what do they mean for the individual and their social environment? Grave goods provide us with valuable information about the rank and self-image of the deceased, while the remains of towns and settlements bear witness to the temporary dominance of Rome in our region and the subsequent economic upheaval towards an agrarian society. Personal artefacts and early churches give us an insight into the emergence of the Christian world of faith. In addition to its rich illustrations, the volume is characterised by its mixture of overview articles and compact explanations of special topics or finds.
