Napoleon's marshals were the most important military figures in the French Empire after the Emperor. He conferred the honour of this office on a total of 26 men, of both bourgeois and noble descent, helping them to great careers. The bestowal of the title was often linked to very selfish motives: Napoleon wanted to draw rivals to his side and commit what he considered the most talented men to his goals.
The Viennese military historian Oskar Criste (1858-1938) traces the individual careers of the Napoleonic marshals: their origins, their political and military activities and their relationship to the Emperor. The short biographies are embedded in Napoleon's own life story and in the context of historical developments in France.
Reprint of the original edition of 1906.
"Strange and adventurous, like the life of their Emperor, had been the career of these soldiers, strange in part and tragic, like that, they should also end." (Oskar Criste)
