From Austerlitz in 1805 to Friedland in 1807, the Russians and French fought each other with the utmost determination. With the Peace of Tilsit and the Congress of Erfurt in 1808, this power struggle seemed to have come to an end. When Russia no longer accepted France's continental blockade and put its own politics first, Napoleon thought he could end this with the threat of force. In 1812, the Grande Armée marched into Russia. The campaign ended disastrously for France and its allies. From 1813 onwards, the Russian armies advanced inexorably and were ultimately among the victors. Gains in territory and population made the Russian Empire stronger than ever for the next few decades. The book features eyewitness accounts from people who were involved in many of the conflicts leading up to the second invasion of Paris in 1815.
