The third generation M1 Abrams tank is the backbone of the armoured divisions of the US military and Marine Corps. The Abrams features heavy armour (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) and the use of the powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. Great attention was paid to crew protection thanks to the separate and heavily protected ammunition depot. The M1 Abrams, which entered service in the early-1980s to replace the obsolete M-60, features a sophisticated fire control system and modern armour. Initially armed with a 105mm gun, it was subsequently fitted with the more modern and powerful 120mm smoothbore gun, capable of delivering a variety of projectiles. The Abrams has been deployed with lethal effect in all major theatres of operations from the Middle East to Afghanistan and has proven superior to all other enemy tanks.
