The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best aeroplanes built during the Second World War. It was produced in more than 20,000 units from 1941 and, together with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, was the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter aircraft. In early versions, such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8, the fighter aircraft was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 double radial engine with 14 cylinders and 1,700 hp, which reached a top speed of 653 km/h. In the course of time, based on the aircraft's successful aerodynamic airframe, the designers realised what can be described as its greatest development. The introduction of the powerful, liquid-cooled 12-cylinder Junkers Jumo 213 engine forced a revision of the aircraft's design, which was characterised by an elongated nose. The D version was nicknamed the "long-nosed Dora" by Luftwaffe pilots, but as soon as it was in the air, they immediately appreciated its characteristics and potential. In fact, the FW-190D was able to compete with more modern Allied fighter aircraft such as the famous P-51D Mustang.
