The M4 Sherman medium tank was undoubtedly the most widely produced and used armoured vehicle of the Second World War. The M4 formed the backbone of the American armoured forces and was produced in numerous versions and variants. The Sherman "Wet" was developed while the tank was in service to reduce the fire hazard that was a common problem with the early production models. When it was introduced in 1944, the fuel tanks were redesigned and repositioned to reduce the likelihood of explosions and fires. The introduction of fuel tanks immersed in a propylene glycol solution - hence the name "wet" - proved to be an effective solution. The crews appreciated the increased reliability and survivability in combat. The Sherman "Wet" was used extensively on the European front in the final phase of the Second World War.
