In the first years of the war, the inconsistency of the Italian medium armoured cars was demonstrated in an operational scenario characterised by war of movement, clashes between heavily armed and armoured vehicles and the use of more effective and lethal anti-tank weapons. By analysing the German armoured cars and the main opponents of the time, the British and the Soviets, a 26-ton tank was developed. The new armoured car, which underwent several design changes over time, had modern features such as sloping front plates, a stronger and more powerful 420 hp diesel engine and a main armament that was better suited for operational use with the introduction of the 75/34 Ansaldo gun. However, the P26/40, the final name of the armoured car, retained some solutions that were out of date and had characterised the production of Italian armoured vehicles since the mid-1930s: the riveted armour and the leaf suspension.
