On Friday, October 13, 1972, the Uruguayan Air Force's Fairchild FH-227 crashed in the Andes on a charter flight from Montevideo to Santiago de Chile. Of the 45 passengers and crew, including a team of young rugby players, 32 initially survived the crash in the mountains at an altitude of around 4,000 m. Their meager food supplies were quickly used up. For days they waited in vain for rescue until they heard from a small pocket radio that the search for them had been called off. In desperation, the group, now reduced to just 16 survivors after an avalanche, undertook several expeditions. Two survivors finally came across a cattle drover after a 10-day march through the high mountains of the Andes. The drover rode eight hours to the nearest police station to get help. The odyssey finally ends after 72 days, during which the group was plagued by unspeakable suffering and despair, but was also able to hold out through willpower and hope for survival. This limited model was created in collaboration with the Museo Andes 1972 in Montevideo, Uruguay, on a scale of 1:200. Numerous publications and films have already been made about this incredible story of survival. More about the museum and its diverse tasks and events can be found at www.mandes.uy .
