The Ilyushin IL-62 was the first four-engine long-haul passenger aircraft to be developed and built in the Soviet Union. It enabled Aeroflot to operate non-stop flights from Moscow to destinations in Africa, Asia and even North America without a stopover ? a major step forward compared with older, less capable aircraft such as the Tupolev Tu-114. From the 1960s right through to the 1990s, the IL-62 was the main aircraft type used by Aeroflot for its long-haul routes and was also operated by other socialist airlines (including Interflug, CSA and LOT). However, of the 295 Ilyushin IL-62s built in total, no fewer than 213 were operated by Aeroflot. In total, it remained in service for over 40 years ? a testament to its robustness and reliability. Aeroflot?s last IL-62M was not withdrawn from service until 2005. This IL-62 model also comes with the removable support wheel, which ensured stability during loading and unloading of the IL-62, which was prone to tipping over due to the rear-mounted engines. A display stand is included.
