Austrian cuirassiers, at halt.
The word ?Kürass? (from the French ?cuirasse?, meaning leather armour) first appeared in the German-speaking world in the 15th century and referred to a horseman?s breast and back armour. Derived from this, the name was later applied to the pistol-wielding cavalrymen. Drawing by Mano Winter, engraving by Kovar.
