A severe wound takes the author away from combat duty in Monte Cassino. After recovering, he is deployed in defensive combat with a tank unit in the southeast of the German Reich. The men fight their way out of Austria in house-to-house battles and dismounts all the way to the American line in order to escape certain death at the hands of the Soviets as soldiers of the Waffen-SS.
