On 7 January 1942, the Soviet counter-offensive to break the blockade of Leningrad began. The Soviet troops reached the Novgorod-Leningrad railway line but were cut off. Only a few thousand Red Army soldiers managed to escape; even the famous General Vlasov became a German prisoner of war here.
