Volume 5 of the series "Landser am Feind". Defensive Battles in Upper Italy 1943-1945 This volume deals with the deployment of a German unit of the Secret Field Police, which acted as the executive branch of the military defence. It rooted out pockets of resistance, arrested enemy agents and eliminated saboteurs in order to keep the own troops' backs free.
The Abwehr conducted the so-called "war in the dark" - the fight against insurgents and saboteurs behind the actual front. The Italian royal family was considered hostile to the Germans, the officer corps was divided, and Italian general staffs spun threads to the Allies. Even more so after Mussolini's deposition on 25 July 1943 and Italy's declaration of war on the Greater German Reich on 13 October 1943, hardly a day went by without acts of sabotage.
