The standard or S frigates (based on the standard NATO frigate concept according to which they were designed) of the Kortenaer class were characterised by functional, relatively compact lines. In functional terms, the ships had the same main task as several other NATO designs, but the S-class frigates had the most balanced sensor and weaponry configuration in terms of offensive and defensive armament.
