From Macedonian prince to conqueror of a world empire. The Macedonians, once a relatively insignificant people in northern Greece, rose to become the hegemonic power in Greece under Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. Later, from 334 BC onwards, Alexander the Great expanded the borders of the empire as far as India. After his invasion of Egypt, he was regarded as a pharaoh there. His spectacular life and incredible achievements became groundbreaking motifs in literature and the visual arts. With the Alexander Empire between Europe and Asia, which fell apart into the Diadochi empires after his death, the fruitful age of Hellenism began.
