This archaeological guide to the Roman Limes in Austria offers an up-to-date overview of the numerous new finds as well as features and presents in a short and concise form a largely complete catalogue of all sites where material evidence of the Roman period has been found.

The Danube formed an outer border of the Imperium Romanum for more than 400 years. During this time, numerous military installations, such as forts or watchtowers, as well as civilian settlements and administrative centres were built along the Austrian section of the Limes. In many cases, these were the nuclei of modern cities and towns along the Danube, whose townscape is still defined by the remains of Roman buildings and streets. In recent decades, the study of these testimonies of the Roman past has experienced a strong upswing, not only in the scientific research of selected sites, but also in the presentation of the latest results to the interested public. The catalogue section is preceded by contributions by archaeologists and ancient historians, which deal with questions of military protection of the border, settlement development, religious history and everyday culture as well as interaction with the neighbouring Germanic tribes.
