At the end of March 1945, Hitler ordered the formation of another division of the Waffen-SS. It was to consist of 1000 Junkers from the SS Junker School "Tölz" and 8,000 recruits born in 1928. The name "Nibelungen" was chosen as a suffix. In this saga, 1,000 knights and 9,000 servants faced battle in the knowledge that it could mean their certain death. There could hardly be a greater parallel to the declining Third Reich. In this book, the history of this 38th SS Grenadier Division "Nibelungen" is traced comprehensively for the first time, whereby not only numerous members of the division have their say, but also various local chronicles have been evaluated.
In the last days of the Second World War, partly war-disabled persons together with 16- and 17-year-old youths - without the support of their own air force - now faced an opponent who was in many ways superior in terms of men and material.
