The panzer divisions are the best known and most powerful units of the Waffen-SS. They took part in practically all major combat operations of the Second World War. Their names are associated with the battles of Kharkov and Kursk in 1943, Cherkassy, Normandy and the Ardennes in 1944, as well as Pomerania and Hungary in 1945. Originating as pure infantry units, they were reorganised in the course of the war, first into panzer grenadier divisions and then into panzer divisions.
Always weakened by secondments to newly formed SS units, they nevertheless distinguished themselves by their high fighting strength and morale, even though in the last years of the war losses were no longer replaced by volunteers but by secondments from other parts of the Wehrmacht. The author traces this development, names the places of deployment, armament, equipment and combat strengths. He describes the operational events with the help of eyewitness accounts, unknown photos and many other documents. The result is a work that provides an objective overview of these Waffen SS units.
