This book presents the memoirs of two members of the Waffen-SS, both of whom entered war service on the German side as ethnic Germans from the south-eastern region. Zvonimir Bernwald became an interpreter in the 13th SS Volunteer Mountain Division "Handschar" (Croatian No. 1) because of his language skills and was last a company commander in the 31st SS Volunteer Grenadier Division, which was composed of ethnic Germans from the Batschka.
Hans Würtz joined the 4th SS Police Panzer Grenadier Division and was deployed in Greece and the ethnic German settlement areas of the Southeast Region. Both describe their childhood and military service very plastically. Rare picture documents enrich these memoirs. Last but not least, they are also a piece of settlement history and describe the expulsion of the ethnic Germans from autumn 1944.
