This special issue of the journal "Zeitreise Österreich" was published on the centenary "anniversary" of the outbreak of the First World War. The intention of this volume is to highlight some of the often forgotten aspects of this war that contributed to anchoring this "primordial catastrophe" of the 20th century, as the conflict is often called, in the memory of subsequent generations for so long.

For this war in particular went far beyond military events. Practically all areas of life were affected by the war, housewives suffered from the lack of supplies, the economy was restructured, women experienced integration into the world of work to an extent not seen before. In 1914, Austria-Hungary had around 52 million inhabitants - of these, almost ten million men were drafted in the course of the war; around one million did not survive the war. In addition, there were the civilian victims of the Spanish flu and other diseases, as well as through hunger. Large parts of Europe became war zones or staging areas. The war - in this form for the first time - also captured the "third dimension": fighting took place in the high mountains, in the air, but also under water.
